5 Proven Home Remedies for Seborrheic Dermatitis on the Scalp

Hi Rebecca,

Yeah the face was the only spot that I used the raw honey treatments. You can find a more detailed post regarding this approach here.

All the best.

Hi Michael,

First of all, thanks for all your research, your website is immensely helpful for SD affected people like me

I wanted to ask that have you heard of raw lime juice treatment? it gave me amazing quick result on face without any problem,

also which natural remedy would you consider best for scalp?

Nioxin shampoo but after Nioxin conditioner scalp therapy beats all these shampoo’s hands down I have used prescription shampoo 's and all the ones you listed Nioxin shampoo and scalp therapy Conditioner will blow your mind and it relieves all itching. You can use it on your face and be normal

My wife has been suffering from this for the last 12years, we have started applying Apple cider vinegar on effected areas 4 to 5 times a day, Believe me it did mirecle.

I tried the garlic solution on my scalp last night and today it feels fantastic! I juiced the garlic bulb and mixed it with about 200ml of water in a squeeze bottle. I applied about 50ml to my scalp and left it on for about 5 hours. I washed it out with just water only. It smelled very strong while it was on and wasn’t the nicest experience but after rinsing, by the next morning the smell was gone completely. I think I’ll try a second application in a few days time. Other things I have tried are vinegar, tea tree and salt solutions but I think the garlic has worked the best so far.

Hello,

I was recently diagnosed with SD on my face. Like most, I tried everything without success. It then dawned on me to try Luvena probiotic wipes seeing as how this appears to be a yeast problem and I wanted to report that I have had great success with this treatment and my problem has completely resolved after about a week and my skin is nice and soft. I have been doing this 2-3 times per day. It may take longer for some. I hope this is helpful.

Here is a link for the Luvena probiotic wipes (there are no parabins or any harmful materials in these. I buy mine online at Walgreens. http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/luvena-anti-itch-medicated-wipes/ID=prod6149544-product

Hello, I am a 17 year old that has had SD for two years now with no relief. I have been prescribed many different shampoos and have tried tea tree oil and every shampoo on the market. Nothing seems to help and now it has spread to the side of my face. Any recommendations?

3 months ago a friend, who had shiny healthy hair, suddenly had her hair become dry, brittle and it started falling out. She also got a diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis and her dermatologist has her using steroid lotions but only the really strong ones are doing anything. The dermatitis spread to her face and she also has acne. she has another steroid cream for the face. She is worried about using these meds for too long. Can she use the honey water or any of the other home remedies and still use the steroid lotion? Does dermatitis cause hair loss? Will clearing up dermatitis increase chances that the hair will come back?

Hi May,

Thank you for the update. Just took a quick look at the shampoo.
Looks fairly interesting. However, it’s hard to say if the cost if justified.

There are a number of options available at Amazon and Whole Foods that have similar ingredients and come at a fraction of the cost.

In the end though, I do agree that finding a mild shampoo that agrees with your scalp might provide better results then medicated dandruff shampoos.

All the best.

Hi Aryan,
First of all, thank you for you positive comment.
Haven’t heard of this treatment yet, however, I’ve previously tried using diluted freshly squeezed lemon juice (topically). This approach didn’t seem to help much and may have even aggravated the SD (can’t say 100% as it was a long time ago).

From everything I’ve seen the most “natural home remedy” for the scalp would likely be the raw honey treatments. This was previously covered in the Raw Honey Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment post. For me, it seemed to difficicult to use this approach.

Personally, I’ve had great results by simply switching my shampoo to one called Andalou Naturals - Moisturizing Shampoo. It’s fairly cheap, smells good and somehow my scalp remains clear. Other people have had great results using my Biom8 Skin Conditioning Oil on their scalp (either directly or mixed into a mild shampoo). This post covers my own regimen in more detail and a bit on how Biom8 came to be.

Hope that helps and best of luck!

Hi Travis,

Thanks for providing the tip. The ingredients look interesting. However, the price tag associated with the product is quite high.
Do you have any more specific on your details on your approach and conditioning in general (ie, usage regimen, history with SD, etc…).

Thanks again and look forward to any updates.
All the best.

Hi Naveed,

Thanks for chiming in and providing your experience with ACV. Hope your wife’s skin keeps improving!
Best of luck.

Hi Will,

Thanks for the update! Glad that you had such good results with the garlic. Are you still doing this on a regular basis? How have things continued?

All the best.

Hi Maria,

Thanks for sharing. Definitely an interesting approach!
Are you using these as indented on the genital area or topically at the problematic site?

Look forward to any updates.
PS> Potentially, if you have the time you provide a more detailed report of your experience with SD and exactly how you have been using the wipes.

Thanks again for sharing and best of luck to you!

Has anyone experience hair loss with the dermatitis?

Hi John,

Sorry to hear you have had to deal with SD.
Here are the 3 most discussed approaches on this website:

My Seborrheic Dermatitis Skin Regimen 2.0
    My Seborrheic Dermatitis Skin Regimen
Nystatin A Potential Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment

Perhaps you may find something that works for amongst these 3.
Additionally, there is a ton of valuable discussion within the comments section.

Hope that helps. Best of luck!

Hi Deborah,

Sorry to hear about your friends unfortunate encounter with SD.
Many people reported using medicated steroid lotions at the same time as starting more natural remedies. The biggest issue most people usually have is that steroid creams can cause long term damage to the skin (and thus should not be used for long durations).

In terms of hair loss, most studies I’ve seen point to a direct correlation of SD reduction and improved/stable hair growth. Currently working on an article specifically on this subject, so considering checking back in about a week for more information (it’s quite a bit to stuff into a comment).

In terms of treatments, these are the two most popular on the website at this moment:

My Seborrheic Dermatitis Skin Regimen 2.0
Nystatin A Potential Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment

Would also recommend checking out the comments section of those posts. There is a significant amount of additional information and discussion there.
Hope that helps and look forward to any updates.

All the best.

Hello Micheal,

I am from India, have been suffering from SD for the past 6-8 years, I have tried a lot of antifungal shampoos, anti allergy tablets & have tried almost all the Skin specialist doctors in Mumbai however still have not got any permanent solution for SD.
I would like to try Biom8 Skin Conditioning Oil, can you please help me as to how can i get the same in INDIA.

Hi Deborah,
I suffered hair loss badly with SD. It started to grow back after I knew what the issue was. I have to keep my scalp so clean now to keep the follicles open. I did not know I had this issue at the the time. So traumatic!!! I understand what you are going through.
Blessings,
Michele
